    - Loading the Starting Simulation File
      For this tutorial, you are provided with a starting simulation file that contains the geometry of the lawnmower blade inside the computational domain and pre-defined regions with boundaries. Since you are using the meshless DEM methodology for this tutorial, there is one solid region for the lawnmower blade and a particle region for the encompassing computational domain. The parameters that you use to specify several settings in the tutorial are already included on the starting simulation file.

      You use the meshfree Discrete Element model, which is part of the Lagrangian Multiphase framework, to model the grass blades as DEM flexible fiber particles within the domain. The gravity vector acts in the negative y direction.

      You define only a rotational motion for the lawnmower blade, which rotates around the y axis with 3625 rpm. The translational motion of the lawnmower is accounted for by specifying a relative tangential velocity at the bottom boundary, that is, the grass moves towards the lawnmower blade.
    - Defining the Grass Blade Interactions
      You define the behaviour of the grass blades when they interact with each other, when they hit the domain walls or when they fall to the ground.

      A table injector injects the grass blades at locations given by an XYZ table.
    - Visualizing the Moving Grass
      You create a visualization scene that displays the grass blades colored with their segment length. The visualization scene also has annotations to display the total grass blades injected and cut in the simulation. To create an animation of the lawnmower blade cutting the grass blades, you set up a solution history file. You set up a histogram plot to investigate the variation in grass blade segment length as the lawnmower cuts the grass blades. The visualization scene and reports for the total number of grass blades injected and cut have been created on the starting file for your convenience, but you are required to complete the setup. You create and set up the solution history file and histogram plot.
    - Running the Simulation
      You run the transient simulation for a physical time of 0.3 s with a time step of 0.0001 s.

      Create an animation of the simulation so that the results can be further analyzed. You also view the histogram of particle component bonded size plot.

Selecting the Physics Models and Defining the Gravitational Field

You use the meshfree Discrete Element model, which is part of the Lagrangian Multiphase framework, to model the grass blades as DEM flexible fiber particles within the domain. The gravity vector acts in the negative y direction.

To select the physics models:

Right-click the Continua node and select New Physics Continuum.

For the physics continuum Continua > Physics 1, select the following models, in order:

Select the Continua > Physics 1 > Reference Values > Gravity > Reference Values node and set Value to [0.0, -9.81, 0.0] m/s^2.
Save the simulation.
