  - Electro-Thermal Modeling: Battery Pack Cooling
    The design of battery pack thermal management is critical in order to ensure that the battery pack operates in a safe temperature range. The objective is to prevent any part of the pack from overheating or from operating in too low temperature conditions. If the battery pack is not sized accordingly, the temperature can accelerate its aging, create an imbalance of the modules and cells in the pack, or lead to hazardous situations.
  - Thermal Runaway: Battery Pack Heat Release and Venting
    Thermal runaway in batteries occurs when a battery cell overheats due to thermal or mechanical failure, short-circuiting, or overcharging/over-discharging. At elevated temperatures, the battery cell materials can start to decompose in exothermic reactions, leading to self-heating behavior. When the self-heating of the battery cell exceeds the rate at which heat can be dissipated to the surroundings, the cell temperature rises exponentially, the battery structure can rupture, and all remaining thermal and electrochemical energy is released to the surroundings.

Setting Up the Battery Module

Set up the battery module with three cells in series.

To set up the battery module:

Increase the number of cells in the battery module from 1 to 3.

Select the Batteries > Battery Modules > Battery Module node.
In the Battery Module - Properties window, set N Series to 3.
Expand the Battery Module > Battery Module Cells node.

Three cells are shown. The cells are named according to their position in the battery module matrix.

To define the position and orientation of the cells in the module:

Right-click the Battery Module Cells node and select Setup Battery Module Cells.

The Edit tab opens which contains the Setup Battery Module Cells panel.

In the Setup Battery Module Cells panel, there are two places to specify cell spacing values:

The Parallel String Spacing group box allows you to define the relative position of multiple strings that are connected in parallel.
The Cell Spacing group box allows you to define the relative position of cells that are connected in series within a particular string.

The cells are arranged in a stack formation, with an offset from one cell to the next of 0.01m. Use the default Offset Vector in the Cell Spacing box to define the position of the 3 cells. The Parallel String Spacing is not required.

In the Cell Spacing group box, make sure that the Offset Vector is set to [0, 0, 0.01]m.
Click Set.

At the bottom of the panel, notice that each cell in the table now has a different offset position. In addition to defining the cell spacing, flip the middle cell in the series. This positions the positive tab of the middle cell next to the negative tab of the first cell, which is necessary for the tab connections in this case.

Activate Flip? for the middle cell.
Click Apply and then click Close.
