To complete this tutorial, you require a double precision version of Simcenter STAR-CCM+. Also, the instructions in this tutorial assume that you are already familiar with certain techniques in Simcenter STAR-CCM+.

    This tutorial demonstrates some of the capabilities of the Ohmic Heating model available in Simcenter STAR-CCM+.

    This tutorial demonstrates how to use the Finite Element Magnetic Potential Vector model to solve for the magnetic flux produced by the magnets of an axial-flux motor.

    - Loading the Initial Simulation
      For this tutorial, you are provided with a simulation file that contains predefined objects.
    - Defining the Fluid Regions
      To define the air domain and its motion, you require four additional regions—two regions for the rotating air domain (one for the air gap and one for the air surrounding the rotor) and two regions for the stationary air domain (one for the air gap and one for the air surrounding the stator).
    - Defining the Fluid Continuum and Specifying the Element Order
      To model the air domain, you require a single physics continuum. The physics continuum contains the Airgap Remeshing model (to ensure a conformal mesh is maintained between the stationary and rotating portions of the air domain) and the Finite Element Magnetic Vector Potential.
    - Generating the Mesh
      The starting simulation contains predefined operations for preparing and meshing the geometry. These operations include generating contacts between the parts, rotating the rotor air gap into its starting position, and generating a tetrahedral volume mesh for all parts.
    - Defining the Interfaces
      The starting simulation includes predefined interfaces between the solid regions. For the newly created fluid regions, you require additional interfaces. Each interface has either an in-place, periodic, or repeating topology.
    - Creating the Reports
      To assess the solution, you create three plots to record the magnetic flux linkage, magnetic torque, and ohmic heat power produced by the various components of the axial flux motor. To see how the magnetic torque and ohmic heat varies as the rotor moves, you set up a report that calculates the position of the rotor.
    - Visualizing the Magnetic Flux Density
      To visualize the magnetic flux density, you set up a scalar scene using the Magnetic Flux Density field function. This magnetic flux density can then be saved to a simulation history file in order to animate the whole solution.
    - Running the Simulation
      Before running the simulation you define the initial current as well as the time-step and maximum physical time in terms of the rotation rate. Also to reduce the simulation time, you apply a minimum limit to the magnetic vector potential residual using a monitor criterion.
  - Electric Circuits: Full-Wave Rectifier
    In power electronics, a full-wave rectifier provides rectification from an AC (Alternating Current) wave to a DC supply. Simcenter STAR-CCM+ provides simulation capabilities that allow you to investigate the effect of circuit component choices on the electromagnetic performance of such devices.
