  - Electro-Thermal Modeling: Battery Pack Cooling
    The design of battery pack thermal management is critical in order to ensure that the battery pack operates in a safe temperature range. The objective is to prevent any part of the pack from overheating or from operating in too low temperature conditions. If the battery pack is not sized accordingly, the temperature can accelerate its aging, create an imbalance of the modules and cells in the pack, or lead to hazardous situations.

    Thermal runaway in batteries occurs when a battery cell overheats due to thermal or mechanical failure, short-circuiting, or overcharging/over-discharging. Importing the Battery Cell

The battery file created in Simcenter Battery Design Studio is imported into Simcenter STAR-CCM+ as a battery cell.

The battery (.tbm) file that you created in Simcenter Battery Design Studio is imported into Simcenter STAR-CCM+ as a battery cell.

To import the battery cell:

Expand the Batteries node.
Right-click Batteries > Battery Cells and select Create from Tbm.
In the Import Battery Data From File dialog, navigate to the Simcenter Battery Design Studio workspace directory, BasicCell, and select the file TutorialCell.tbm.
Click Open.
In the Import Battery Options dialog, ensure that all objects are selected, then click OK.

During the import process, Simcenter STAR-CCM+ builds an idealized model of the cell using the 3D-CAD module. The model is displayed in the 3D-CAD View 1 scene in the Graphics window.

A battery module comprises one or more battery cells. The cells can be arranged in series and parallel. You specify the arrangement and number of cells. As a module typically contains multiple instances of the same cell, Simcenter STAR-CCM+ automatically copies the imported cell for more instances.

In this section of the tutorial, the module contains a single cell.

Right-click Batteries > Battery Modules and select New > TBM Battery Module.

A new Battery Module node is added to the tree. In the Battery Module - Properties window, the N Series and N Parallel properties define the number of cells in the module. By default these values are both set to 1.

The next step is to set up the module cells.

Right-click Battery Module > Battery Module Cells and select Setup Battery Module Cells.
The panel that appears allows you to:
- Define the offset of battery cells in relation to each other.
- Flip or rotate cells.
- Assign different cells to each position in the battery module.

In this case, the default settings are suitable.

Click Apply to assign the imported cell to the battery module.
Click Close.
