Adding Comments to Simulation Objects

With comments, you can add your own notes about an object right alongside that object.

Examples of uses for comments include:

  • Add information about the contents or purpose of a region in addition to its label.
  • Add information about the source of a part within the parts tree.
  • Add details on the contents or usage of a scene or plot.
  • Note the reasons for settings on a boundary, log past changes, and suggest others.

Work with comments using the following techniques:

Action Instructions
Add a comment to an object
  1. Select the node of the object to which you want to add a comment. A bubble appears to the right of the label when you move your mouse over the node.

  2. Click the bubble, or press <Shift>+<F2>.
  3. In the comment editor window, enter your comment.

  4. To save the comment , click (Save Comment), click anywhere outside the editor, or press <Ctrl>+<Enter>.

Alternatively, to exit the dialog without saving, click (Cancel).

After you save the comment, the bubble remains visible next to the node label.

NoteAlthough most objects in the simulation tree support comments, there are a small number that do not, for example, physics materials.
View the content of a comment Use either of the following techniques:
  • Hover with the mouse over the bubble. The content appears in a tooltip.
  • Open the comment editor (click the bubble, or press <Shift>+<F2>).
Delete a comment In the comment editor window, click (Delete Comment) or press <Ctrl>+<Delete>.
Open a simple search for all comments in the simulation In a comment editor window, click (Search for Comments) or press <Ctrl>+<F>. A search results window opens in the workspace with a list of all comments in the simulation.
Search for comments containing specified text
  1. In the search field near the top of the search results window, enter text by which to filter the comments.

  2. To do more with your search results, use query editing (described below).
Search for comments that match a query
  1. To start a search by query, click (Search by Query) at the top right of the search results window.
  2. In the search results window, edit the default predicate. Alternatively, replace it or supplement it with additional predicates. For more information about predicates and the filters that use them, see Object Filters.

For example, you can use the compound predicate editors AND and OR to find all comments in the simulation that contain TO DO, WARNING, or both.

  3. To save the search results, right-click the predicate and select Create New Filter. If you have multiple predicates, perform this right-click action in the view outside the components of the predicate.

A new filter node appears in the Automation > Filters node.
