Connected Simcenter STAR-CCM+ Virtual Reality: Launching and Loading Scenes

Prerequisites:

  • Launch Simcenter STAR-CCM+ and load the simulation file that you wish to view. If you want to allow other users to connect to the same Virtual Reality session in collaboration mode, be sure to set the Connection Mode of the simulation to Collaboration.
  • The virtual reality hardware must be connected before you attempt to launch Simcenter STAR-CCM+ Virtual Reality. Otherwise Simcenter STAR-CCM+ Virtual Reality exits with an error.
  1. To launch Simcenter STAR-CCM+ Virtual Reality in connected mode, interactively:
    1. From the Windows Start menu, select Siemens > Simcenter STAR-CCM+ Virtual Reality.
    2. In Simcenter STAR-CCM+ Virtual Reality, select File > Connect.
    3. In the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ Virtual Reality server dialog, specify the following:
      • Host—If you are running Simcenter STAR-CCM+ on the same computer as Simcenter STAR-CCM+ Virtual Reality, enter localhost. For any other computer, enter the name that appears in the Host property of the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ server node. In some cases you must use the fully qualified domain after the hostname, for example, mycomputer.siemens.com.
      • Port Number—Enter the number that appears in the Port property of the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ server node.

To obtain the hostname and portnumber for a running Simcenter STAR-CCM+:

      1. In the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ UI, select Window > Servers.
      2. In the Servers panel, select the local server for the simulation to which you wish to connect.

  2. To launch Simcenter STAR-CCM+ Virtual Reality in connected mode from the command line:
In a command prompt window, enter:
    [INSTALLDIR]\starvr hostname portnumber

Where hostname and portnumber are as described above.

  3. In connected mode, to open scenes, choose from the list that you see after connecting to the server. If there is only one scene, Simcenter STAR-CCM+ Virtual Reality connects to that scene automatically.
If you are connecting to a colleague's server in collaboration mode, then from the list of scenes on the remote server, choose the one that your colleagues are also using.
  4. If you are connecting to a collaborative virtual reality session that has already been set up:
    1. Launch Simcenter STAR-CCM+ Virtual Reality.
    2. Have the correct host and port number for the remote Simcenter STAR-CCM+ Virtual Reality session.
NoteDepending on how your network is configured, you may need additional information to connect to the host computer, such as the network path.
    3. Select File > Connect.
NoteDepending on network bandwidth, connecting to the remote session can take some time.
