Advanced Rendering: Ray Tracing

Simcenter STAR-CCM+ provides advanced rendering capabilities that you can use to create scenes that resemble real-life images.

Ray tracing is a method of rendering a photorealistic scene using rays of light. Rays are emitted from objects in the scene and are traced back to the image displayed in the scene. Depending on the quality settings used, it can take a while for all the rays to be traced. Ray tracing calculates how light interacts with objects and surfaces in the scene to display an accurate representation of light and shadow.

In this tutorial, you work with a simplified representation of a sedan car to see how advanced rendering, and ray tracing in particular, can provide photorealistic images of your results.

For this tutorial, you are provided with a starting simulation file which includes the following items set up for you:
  • Mesh
  • Regions
  • Physics
  • Scenes
