Client-Server Setup
Simcenter STAR-CCM+ uses a client-server architecture in which the simulation objects are created on the server and the client provides access to these objects for setup and display.
Client-Server Connections
Simcenter STAR-CCM+ allows you to connect a client to any running server for which you have access, and also to disconnect clients when you choose. The client version must match the server version for a successful connection. Secure connections require additional inputs.
Server Processes Reference
Server processes are listed beneath the Local Servers node in the Servers window. Additionally, this node has its own pop-up menu that provides server-specific actions.

Client-Server Setup

- Client-Server Connections
  Simcenter STAR-CCM+ allows you to connect a client to any running server for which you have access, and also to disconnect clients when you choose. The client version must match the server version for a successful connection. Secure connections require additional inputs.

    Before Simcenter STAR-CCM+ can launch server processes on remote machines, you must provide details of a remote shell environment that Simcenter STAR-CCM+ can use. This environment must not require any password when making connections, although you can use a different username from your own.

    Large simulations generally require that you prepare the case on your local machine, then submit the case to a remote machine, or remote cluster, for running. In these cases, you can use the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ batch client that executes a series of commands from a macro file without user interaction.

    You can configure Simcenter STAR-CCM+ to release a license automatically (by shutting down the server) when it detects no activity for a set amount of time.

- Mixed or Double Precision
  Simcenter STAR-CCM+ comes in two versions: a mixed precision version and a double precision version. Both versions are provided on the download area of the Support Center portal.
- Running Simcenter STAR-CCM+ on Linux ARM64
  Simcenter STAR-CCM+ is supported on Linux ARM64 for running simulations in batch mode. The graphical user interface (GUI) is not officially supported in this release. Some other restrictions are in place for this platform, including unsupported modules.
- Launching Simcenter STAR-CCM+ and Working With Simulations
  A Simcenter STAR-CCM+ simulation exists on a server, and is accessed by connecting a client to the server on which the simulation exists.

  A parallel computation is one where the work is computed by more than one process.
- GPGPU Computation
  The idea behind general-purpose computing on graphics processing units (GPGPU computation) is that you assign computations that are traditionally solved on a CPU (central processing unit) to a graphics processing unit (GPU). The nature of operations on the GPU means that a single unit can deliver computational performance comparable to using many CPUs in parallel. GPGPU computation is only supported for Simcenter STAR-CCM+ servers running under Linux.
- Teamcenter Share
  Teamcenter Share is a collaboration platform that you can access directly within the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ workspace as well as in a web browser. Teamcenter Share allows you to upload and share simulation files and related data, such as Viewer (.sce) files. Through the integration within Simcenter STAR-CCM+, you can download and open files from this platform.

Server Processes Reference

Server processes are listed beneath the Local Servers node in the Servers window. Additionally, this node has its own pop-up menu that provides server-specific actions.

Local Servers Manager Properties


Refresh Time	This is the upper limit on time (in milliseconds) that may elapse before Simcenter STAR-CCM+ refreshes the list of processes. The list also gets updated in response to events such as the opening or closing of a simulation. However, the window must be in the foreground to be updated.
Time to Live	Essentially, this is the number of routers that the broadcast message will be allowed to jump when searching for servers on the network. However, the accuracy of this number depends on how routers on the internal network are configured.

Connect	Executes the connect to server action to connect this client to the selected server process. More than one client can be connected to a given server process.
Properties	Displays the properties of the object in a separate stay-on-top modeless dialog.

Local Server Process Properties

These properties apply to each entry listed beneath the Local Servers node.


Host	The name of the computer where the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ server process is running (read-only).
Port	The network port on which the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ server process is listening for clients (read-only).
Compute Processes	Indicates the number of processes running for the selected Simcenter STAR-CCM+ server (read-only).
File	The path name of the simulation file (read-only). This value may be blank if the server process is for a new, unsaved simulation.
Clients	The user name and computer IP address of each connected client computer. This read-only value may be blank if no client is currently connected to the server.
User	The name of the user who started the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ server process (read-only).
Type	The type of server process, Simulation or Design Manager Project (read-only).
