Wall Distance

Wall distance is a parameter that represents the distance from a cell centroid to the nearest wall face with a non-slip boundary condition. Various physical models require this parameter to account for near-wall effects.

There are two methods available in Simcenter STAR-CCM+ to calculate the wall distance:

  • Implicit Tree

This wall distance method makes an exact projection calculation in real space, which is based on a triangulation of the surface mesh. The use of an implicit search tree algorithm accelerates the calculation.

  • PDE

The PDE wall distance method makes a close estimate of the distance that is based on a Partial Differential Equation (PDE) calculation, the Poisson equation.

The PDE wall distance calculation is faster, but solving for the exact wall distance is more accurate.

The wall distance calculation takes place during the initialization step of the simulation. Information on the progress of this calculation is shown in the progress bar and status bar beneath the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ explorer window.

Since the wall distance is a mesh parameter, it does not clear automatically when the solution is cleared. To clear the wall distance, select Reset Mesh in the Solutions > Clear Solutions menu.
