Creating the Wrapper Controls

To capture the input HVAC duct geometry accurately, you define contact prevention controls on the surface wrapper operation. Contact prevention controls inform the wrapper that two faces should not touch at a point unless the distance between the faces is less than a specified minimum size. Without this control, the mesh can become coarse at the interesection between surfaces on the vanes or between the vanes and duct interior.

  1. Create a one group contact prevention set for the duct vanes:
    1. Right-click the Wrapped Duct > Contact Prevention node and select New > One Group Contact Prevention Set.
    2. Rename the Contact Prevention > Contact Prevention node to Contact Prevention Vanes.
    3. Select the Contact Prevention Vanes node and set the following properties:
      Property Value
      Minimum Size 5.0E-5 m
      Surfaces Tag contains Surface_DuctVanes
  2. Create a two group contact prevention set for the duct interior and duct vane parts:
    1. Right-click the Contact Prevention node and select New > Two Group Contact Prevention Set.
    2. Rename the Contact Prevention > Contact Prevention node to Contact Prevention Duct/Vanes.
    3. Select the Contact Prevention Duct/Vanes node and set the following properties:
      Property Value
      Minimum Size 5.0E-5 m
Surface Set 1 Tag contains Surface_Duct Interior
Surface Set 2 Tag Contains Surface_DuctVanes
Specifying a minimum size for the contact prevention reduces defeaturing at the intersection between surfaces.

To make sure that the mesh captures the input geometry, set up defeature controls.

  1. Create a one group wrapper defeature set for the duct vanes:
    1. Right-click the Wrapped Duct > Wrapper Defeature node and select New > One Group Wrapper Defeature Control.
    2. Rename the Wrapper Defeature Control node to Wrapper Defeature Control Vanes.
    3. Select the Wrapper Defeature Vanes node and set surfaces to Tag contains Surface_DuctVanes.
  2. Create a two group wrapper defeature set for the duct interior and duct vane parts:
    1. Right-click the Wrapped Duct > Wrapper Defeature node and select New > Two Group Wrapper Defeature Control.
    2. Rename the Wrapper Defeature Control node to Wrapper Defeature Control Duct/Vanes.
    3. Select the Wrapper Defeature Control Duct/Vanes node and set the following properties:
      Property Value
Surface Set 1 Tag contains surface_DuctVanes
Surface Set 2 Tag contains surface_DuctInterior
To reorder the operations so the Wrapped Duct operation is the first in the sequence:
  1. Right-click the Geometry > Operations node and select Reorder....
  2. In the Reorder Mesh Operations dialog, drag the Wrapped Duct mesh operation from position 13 to position 1 and click OK.
Under the Geometry > Parts node, Simcenter STAR-CCM+ creates a part called Wrapped Duct which is the output of the wrapped duct mesh operation.
  1. Select the Wrapped Duct part and set Tags to Part_Duct.
  2. Drag the Wrapped Duct part into the composite part labelled WorkingParts - do not modify.
  3. Save the simulation.
