Simcenter Nastran Co-Simulation: Disc Valve
To solve fluid-structure interaction problems, you can couple Simcenter STAR-CCM+ and Simcenter Nastran in a co-simulation analysis. Simcenter STAR-CCM+ computes the flow solution and Simcenter Nastran computes the structural analysis for the solid.
Preparing the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ Simulation
For this tutorial, you are provided with a standalone fluid simulation that includes the required region, mesh operations, and physics models. Modify this simulation for co-simulation with Simcenter Nastran.
Defining Connection Settings
Define the remaining co-simulation settings, including the details for launching Simcenter Nastran, the concurrency mode, and the coupling time interval at which the simulations exchange data.

      - Loading the Initial Fluid Simulation
        For this simulation, you are provided with a starting file that includes the required fluid region and physics continuum. Load the starting simulation in Simcenter STAR-CCM+ and generate the fluid mesh.
      - Activating Co-Simulation Models
        For co-simulation with Simcenter Nastran, you require two physics continua—one continuum for the physics that are solved in Simcenter STAR-CCM+ (the internal continuum) and one continuum that represents the physics in Simcenter Nastran (the external continuum).
      - Specifying the Coupled Boundary and Exchanged Fields
        Define the fluid-structure interface and the fields that are exchanged during co-simulation. In this simulation, Simcenter STAR-CCM+ computes the fluid pressure and wall shear stress and Simcenter Nastran computes the disc displacement. The morpher updates the fluid mesh to account for the displacement of the solid disc at the fluid-structure interface.

  - Abaqus Co-Simulation: Thermal Coupling
    This tutorial demonstrates how to run a thermal co-simulation case using Simcenter STAR-CCM+ and Abaqus. Co-simulation involves a strong coupling between the two codes, in which data exchange occurs at frequent intervals, that are known as coupling steps. In this case, data is exchanged at the end of each time-step, and a relatively large time-step is used to approximate a steady-state solution.
  - Abaqus Co-Simulation: Mechanical Coupling
    This tutorial demonstrates how to carry out a mechanical co-simulation case using Simcenter STAR-CCM+ and Abaqus. Co-simulation involves a strong coupling between the two codes. Data is exchanged at frequent intervals that are called coupling steps. This level of communication between the solvers allows you to obtain a full solution across the fluid-solid interface.
  - gPROMS File Export: Spray Dryer
    Simcenter STAR-CCM+ allows for one-way coupling with gPROMS, a process modeling platform for the simulation of complex systems. In Simcenter STAR-CCM+ you reduce three-dimensional solution data to discrete values defined for clusters of cells; data from these clusters can then be exported to a network in gPROMS.

    This tutorial demonstrates the typical workflow for co-simulation with the engine simulation code GT-SUITE from Gamma Technologies.

Expand the External Links > Link 1 > Conditions node and set the following properties:

Launch Partner Option	Option	Launch Application This setting instructs Simcenter STAR-CCM+ to launch the Simcenter Nastran solver automatically.
Concurrency Option	Option	Lag When you launch the co-simulation, Simcenter Nastran runs first and Simcenter STAR-CCM+ waits for initial data. This is the only option available for co-simulation with Simcenter Nastran.
Coupling Negotiation Option	Option	Time-Step With this setting, the time interval at which the simulations exchange data is equal to the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ simulation time-step.
Mapping Option	Option	Map Both Directions Simcenter STAR-CCM+ is responsible for interpolating both the imported and exported fields to the relevant mesh. This is the only option available for co-simulation with Simcenter Nastran.

To allow Simcenter STAR-CCM+ to launch Simcenter Nastran automatically, specify the location of the Simcenter Nastran input file and executable:
