Parts-Based Shells: Exhaust Pipe
Simcenter STAR-CCM+ provides support for thin-walled structures that are best represented by a single-cell layer during simulation. These single-cell layers are known as shells. One of the main advantages of using shell elements is that it reduces the computational time and resources required for simulations.
Importing the Geometry
In this tutorial, you are provided with an exhaust pipe CAD model. You import the geometry into 3D-CAD directly, as then you can make changes before continuing the setup under Geometry > Parts.

Importing the Geometry

In this tutorial, you are provided with an exhaust pipe CAD model. You import the geometry into 3D-CAD directly, as then you can make changes before continuing the setup under Geometry > Parts.

To import the exhaust geometry in 3D-CAD:

Create a new Simcenter STAR-CCM+ simulation.
Select File > Import > Import CAD Model into 3D-CAD....
In the Open dialog, navigate to the heatTransferAndRadiation folder of the downloaded tutorials bundle.
See Downloading the Tutorials Files from the Support Center Portal.
Select exhaust_pipe.x_t, then click Open.
Rename the 3D-CAD Model 1 node to Exhaust Pipe.
Save the simulation as PartsBasedShells.sim.
