Importing the Unified Geometry

Import the unified HVAC duct geometry and assign tags to the part and its surfaces using the tags present in the template. The mesh operations and scene displayers contain tag based predicates as input parts—therefore assigning the tags sets the inputs.

To import the duct geometry:
  1. Select File > Import > Import Surface Mesh.
  2. In the Open dialog, navigate to your working directory, select the UnitedDuct.dbs file and click Open.
  3. In the Import Surface Options dialog, deactivate Open Geometry Scene After Import and click OK.
Simcenter STAR-CCM+ adds a geometry part under Geometry > Parts with the name UnitedDuct.
  4. To view the surfaces associated with the duct geometry, expand the UnitedDuct > Surfaces node.
To assign tags to the surfaces associated with the united duct:
  1. Multi-select the Adjuster, Clip, Flap, Vane 1, Vane 2, and Vane 3 surface nodes and set Tags to Surface_DuctVanes.
  2. Set the Tags property for the External and Internal surfaces to Surface_DuctExterior and Surface_DuctInterior respectively.
  3. Select the UnitedDuct part node and set Tags to Part_Duct.
The duct geometry becomes visible in the 01_InputGeometry scene.

The inflow and outflow regions are aligned with the duct geometry.

The template includes parts that enclose both the duct and vent of the HVAC duct geometry. The predefined DuctVolume operation, also provided in the template simulation, uses these closing parts for the extraction of the duct volume part, which represents the region of air flowing through the duct.
  1. To view the closures, open the Scenes > 02_Closures scene.
The template also contains a part to refine the mesh surrounding the vent geometry at the outlet, where a greater mesh density is required in order to resolve the flow.
  1. Save the simulation.
