Creating Periodic Contacts

To simulate the behavior of the full geometry model, you create periodic contacts between the part surfaces of the reduced geometry.

To create a periodic contact between the side surfaces of the air domain:
  1. Expand the Geometry > Parts > Air > Surfaces node.
  2. Multi-select S1 and S2, right-click one of the selected surfaces and select Create Periodic.
Simcenter STAR-CCM+ adds the periodic contact under the Geometry > Contacts node.

To create a periodic contact between the side surfaces of the magnet:
  1. Expand the Parts > Magnet > Surfaces node and multi-select S1 and S2.
  2. Right-click one of the selected surfaces and select Create Periodic.
To create a periodic contact between the side surfaces of the magnet plate:
  1. Expand the Parts > Magnet Plate > Surfaces node and multi-select S1 and S2.
  2. Right-click one of the selected surfaces and select Create Periodic.
To create a periodic contact between the side surfaces of the stator plate:
  1. Expand the Parts > Stator Plate > Surfaces node and multi-select S1 and S2.
  2. Right-click one of the selected surfaces and select Create Periodic.

As the contacts have rotational periodicity, you specify the origin and direction of the axis of rotation:
  1. Expand the Contacts node and multi-select the following nodes:
    • Air/Air > S1/S2 > Periodic Transformation
    • Magnet Plate/Magnet Plate > S1/S2 > Periodic Transformation
    • Magnet/Magnet > S1/S2 > Periodic Transformation
    • Stator Plate/Stator Plate > S1/S2 > Periodic Transformation
  2. Set Axis of Rotation Specification to Specify Axis.
Simcenter STAR-CCM+ automatically sets the rotation axis to the Z axis, which is appropriate to this case.
  3. You can visualize the contacts in the geometry scene by selecting the corresponding nodes.
For example, if you select the Geometry > Contacts > Magnet/Magnet node, Simcenter STAR-CCM+ highlights the corresponding magnet surfaces in the scene:

  4. Save the simulation.
