Importing the Geometry

In this tutorial, you are provided with a CAD model representing 1/8 of the geometry. From this CAD model, you create geometry parts for the magnet, the magnet plate, the stator plate, and the surrounding air.

  1. Launch Simcenter STAR-CCM+ and start a new simulation.
  2. Right-click the Geometry > 3D-CAD Models node and select New.
  3. In 3D-CAD, rename the 3D-CAD Model 1 node to Axial Flux Motor.
  4. Right-click the Axial Flux Motor node and select Import > CAD Model.
  5. In the Open dialog, navigate to the electromagnetism folder of the downloaded tutorial files.
  6. Select axialFluxMotor.x_b and click Open.
  7. Close 3D-CAD.
Create geometry parts from the CAD model:
  1. Expand the Geometry > 3D-CAD Models > Axial Flux Motor > Body Groups node and multi-select Air, Magnet, Magnet Plate, and Stator Plate.
  2. Right-click one of the selected nodes and select New Geometry Part.
  3. In the Part Creation Options dialog, click OK.
To visualize the geometry:
  1. Right-click the Scenes node and select New > Geometry.
  2. Click (Make Scene Transparent) and position the geometry as desired.

  3. Save the simulation to your working directory as axialFluxMotor.sim.
