3D-CAD: Cyclone Separator
Cyclone separators provide a low-cost solution for removing particulate matter from gas or liquid flows. In Simcenter STAR-CCM+, the 3D-CAD geometry modeler provides all the tools necessary for creating this type of geometry directly.
In this tutorial you create a
cyclone separator model based on the dimensions used by Stairmand in his experimental
studies[reflink]. To
permit parametric studies, all dimensions are created relative to the core cyclone
diameter, D.

While creating the geometry in
3D-CAD, you set up a design parameter for the core diameter, D. Thereafter, you can set
any diameter you wish by adjusting the parameter—and all other dimensions update
accordingly.

The following basic concepts of 3D-CAD are introduced in this tutorial:
- Creating a 3D-CAD model
- Creating sketches and applying dimensions
- Using the loft feature and extruding sketches
- Setting up a design parameter
