Reporting Mass Flowrate
To obtain an accurate value of the computed mass flowrate in a simulation, apply the Mass Flow report to a part surface, boundary, or interface.
Simcenter STAR-CCM+ stores the mass flowrate on each face centroid. The sign convention is such that a positive value indicates mass flow out of the domain and a negative value indicates mass flow into the domain. When you run a mass flow report, Simcenter STAR-CCM+ sums the individual mass flowrates from all the faces on the surface.
Although you can run the mass flow report on an arbitrary plane section, interpolation errors mean that the computed value is an approximation. Choosing a part surface, boundary, or interface for the report allows Simcenter STAR-CCM+ to access the stored quantity without interpolation.
To compute mass flowrate:
- Right-click the Reports node and choose .
-
Select the newly created report and set Parts to the
boundary or interface through which you require the mass flowrate.
Note The Smooth Values property has no impact on the mass flowrate calculation; leave the property in its deactivated state. Note When the Mass Flow and Mass Flow Averaged reports are run on derived parts with moving meshes as inputs, they behave as though the derived part were instantaneously fixed to the mesh, and use the fluid velocity relative to the Region mesh to compute mass flow. -
Analyze the mass flow report:
- For an instantaneous calculation using the current simulation data,
right-click the report and select Run
Report.
Simcenter STAR-CCM+ writes the mass flowrate, in the selected units, to the Output window.
- For monitoring the mass flow rate while the simulation is running,
right-click the report and select Create Monitor and
Plot from Report.
The plot opens in the Graphics window and updates continuously as the solution progresses.
- For an instantaneous calculation using the current simulation data,
right-click the report and select Run
Report.
