Setting Solver Parameters and Monitoring

Before you run the simulation you must define the time-step and stopping criteria. Additional reports are also necessary for monitoring core voltage waveforms within the circuit.

To set the solver parameters:
  1. Select the Solvers > Implicit Unsteady node and set Time-Step to 1/50/27.
This form of entry indicates that you want to have 27 discrete solution points for each current cycle (50 Hz).
  2. Select the Solvers > Transverse Magnetic Potential > AMG Linear Solver node and set Acceleration Method to Bi Conjugate Gradient Stabilized.
  3. Select the Stopping Criteria > Maximum Physical Time node and set Maximum Physical Time to 0.07 s.
By default, Simcenter STAR-CCM+ monitors the Transverse Magnetic Potential residual. Normalization is not necessary when monitoring this residual.
  1. To deactivate residual normalization, select the Monitors > Transverse Magnetic Potential node and set Normalization Option to Off.
For monitoring the solution, you define three reports: one each for the current waveform through the primary and secondary coils, and one for the load in the secondary circuit.
  1. To define the current reports:
    1. Right-click the Reports node and select New > Circuit Model > Circuit Element Current.
    2. Rename the Circuit Element Current 1 node to I Primary Coil.
    3. Select the I Primary Coil node and set Circuit Element to Primary.
    4. Using the same steps, create two further reports with the following properties:
      Report Name Circuit Element
      I Secondary Coil Secondary
      I Secondary Load Secondary Load
  2. Multi-select the three current report nodes, right-click, and select Create Monitor and Plot from Report. In the dialog, select Single Plot.
  3. Within the Plots node, rename Reports Plot to Rectifier Currents.
  4. Select the Plots > Rectifier Currents node and set Title to Rectifier Currents.
  5. Save the simulation.
