Electric Circuits: Full-Wave Rectifier
In power electronics, a full-wave rectifier provides rectification from an AC (Alternating Current) wave to a DC supply. Simcenter STAR-CCM+ provides simulation capabilities that allow you to investigate the effect of circuit component choices on the electromagnetic performance of such devices.
Importing the Rectifier Geometry
Although the electromagnetic simulation for this tutorial is modeled as a two-dimensional axisymmetric case, the initial CAD geometry is three-dimensional.

    - Preparing the Rectifier Mesh
      As the geometry is axisymmetric, you can prepare a two-dimensional mesh for this simulation. Also, because fluid effects are ignored in this simulation, you can assign the air and core parts to the same region.
    - Setting Up Physics for Air and Core
      In the simulation that this tutorial presents, only the electromagnetic behavior in response to the induced current is of interest. No fluid or thermal effects are considered. For this reason, a simplified approach is possible when defining the physics for the air and core regions.
    - Setting Up Coil Physics
      For the two coils (primary and secondary), you define a single physics continuum that includes the excitation model and the electric circuit model. Regions that are assigned to this continuum expose a parameter for defining the number of turns in the excitation coil.
    - Sketching the Rectifier Circuit
      When you activated the circuit model for the Coil Physics continuum, Simcenter STAR-CCM+ added the Circuits node within the simulation tree. Here you use the circuit editor to create the rectifier circuit with its primary and secondary loops.
    - Completing the Circuit Setup
      Parameters for circuit elements must be set using their nodes in the simulation tree. You also create the inductance connection between the primary and secondary coils using the node tree.
    - Setting Solver Parameters and Monitoring
      Before you run the simulation you must define the time-step and stopping criteria. Additional reports are also necessary for monitoring core voltage waveforms within the circuit.
    - Running the Simulation
      As only the transverse magnetic potential is solved for in this axisymmetric simulation, the simulation runs quickly.

Importing the Rectifier Geometry

Although the electromagnetic simulation for this tutorial is modeled as a two-dimensional axisymmetric case, the initial CAD geometry is three-dimensional.

To import the geometry:

Launch Simcenter STAR-CCM+ and start a new simulation.
Select File > Import > Import Surface Mesh.
In the Open dialog, navigate to the electromagnetism folder of the downloaded tutorials bundle.
Select rectifiedTransformerParts.x_b and click OK.
Click OK to accept the default settings.
Save the simulation as rectifierCircuit.sim.
