Generating the Mesh

Use the polyhedral mesher to generate the volume mesh in all parts of the model.

As concentration gradients are highest across the SEI, you define prism layers to grow on either side of the interface. To ensure Li-ion/salt conservation on the interfaces between the electrodes and the separator, it is also best to designate a conformal mesh at these interfaces.

To generate the mesh:

  1. Right-click the Geometry > Operations node and select New > Mesh > Automated Mesh.
  2. In the Create Automated Mesh Operation dialog:
    1. Select Anode Collector and Cathode Collector from the Parts list.
    2. Select the following meshers, in order:
      Group Mesher
      Surface Meshers Surface Remesher
      Core Volume Meshers Polyhedral Mesher
    3. Click OK.
  3. Rename the Automated Mesh node to Collector.
  4. Create another Automated Mesh operation.
    1. Select the following parts:
      • Anode AM
      • Anode Electrolyte
      • Cathode AM
      • Cathode Electrolyte
      • Separator
    2. Select the following meshing models:
      Group Mesher
      Surface Meshers Surface Remesher
      Core Volume Meshers Polyhedral Mesher
Optional Boundary Layer Meshers Prism Layer Mesher
    3. Click OK.
  5. Rename the Automated Mesh node to AM Electrolyte Separator.
  6. Edit the Operations > AM Electrolyte Separator > Default Controls node and set the following:
    Node Property Setting
    Base Size Value 0.25 m
Prism Layer Controls > Number of Prism Layers Number of Prism Layers 10
  7. Edit the Operations > Collector > Default Controls node and set the following:
    Node Property Setting
    Base Size Value 0.1 m

Prism layers are required only at the SEI. Deactivate prism layers on all other boundaries, and activate them on the SEI:

  1. Right-click the Operations > AM Electrolyte Separator > Custom Controls node and select New > Surface Control.
  2. Rename the Surface Control node to Disabled Prism Layers.
  3. Expand the Disabled Prism Layers node and set the following:
    Node Property Setting
    Disabled Prism Layers Part Surfaces
    • Anode AM > Surfaces > Anode AM/Anode Collector
    • Anode Electrolyte > Surfaces > Anode Electrolyte/Anode Collector
    • Cathode AM > Surfaces > Cathode AM/Cathode Collector
    • Cathode Electrolyte > Surfaces > Cathode Electrolyte/Cathode Collector
Controls > Prism Layers Prism Layers Disable

You are ready to generate the volume mesh.

  1. Right-click the Geometry > Operations node and select Execute All.
  2. From the menu bar, select Mesh > Scale Mesh....
  3. In the Scale Mesh dialog, set the Scale Factor to 1E-5.
  4. Click Apply to scale down the mesh.
  5. Click Close.
  6. Create a Mesh Scene.

  7. Save the simulation.
