  - Adjoint Shape Optimization: Mesh Sensitivity for Dual Element Wing
    A typical application of an adjoint flow analysis is to use the computed gradients in a shape optimization study with respect to a chosen cost function. In Simcenter STAR-CCM+, simulation operations allow you to construct an automated pipeline for optimization studies without any need for Java macros.

    The operating conditions of an air compressor are stable for mass flow values within a specific range. The operating range varies with the rotational rate of the air compressor rotor. Mass flow values below this range are too low to maintain the desired pressure ratio and can lead to a harmful surge in the air compressor. Mass flow above this range can lead to a choke in the air compressor.

Running the Study and Reviewing the Performance Data

Specify the run settings for the study.

To reduce the time it takes to complete the study, run multiple jobs at the same time.

Expand the Design Studies > Sweep > Settings node.

Select the Run Settings node and set the following settings:

Right-click the Design Studies > Sweep node and select Run Study.

Design Manager creates all files that are necessary for running the performance sweep.

When building completes, Design Manager schedules each simulation for running. Depending on the number of simultaneous jobs that you set in the Run Settings, multiple jobs run at the same time. The Simcenter STAR-CCM+ servers for each job are visible in the server list.

The Output Table window appears and displays a list of designs being investigated and the specific settings of the input parameters. In this window, you can monitor the progress of each design in real time.

The performance plot updates as the optimized design is evaluated with different mass flows at the inlet. The final plot is shown as follows:
