Defining the Coils Physics

Select the physics models for the excitation coils and define region settings.

The starting simulation already contains a physics continuum for the coils. This continuum is assigned to the coil region.
  1. For the physics continuum Coils, select the following models:
    Group box Physics Model
    Space Three Dimensional (preselected)
    Time Implicit Unsteady
    Material Solid
    Optional Models Electromagnetism
    Enabled Models Gradients (selected automatically)
Electromagnetism Finite Element Magnetic Vector Potential
Enabled Models Eddy Current Suppression (selected automatically)
Optional Models Finite Element Excitation Coil
Optional Models Excitation Coil Lumped Parameter

The Excitation Coil Lumped Parameter model extracts the lumped parameters (that is, resistance and inductance) of the excitation coil region. This model enables reports that calculate the magnetic flux linkage and the voltage that is induced in the coils by motion.

For the coils, choose copper from the material database:
  1. Right-click the Continua > Coils > Models > Solid > Al node and select Replace with...
  2. In the Replace Material dialog, select Material Databases > Standard > Solids > Cu (Copper) and click OK.
The default material properties are appropriate for this case.
To define the direction of the electric current through the coils, you specify the conditions on the relevant boundary surfaces:
  1. Expand the Regions > Coils > Boundaries node.
  2. Select the the Bottom > Physics Conditions > Electric Current Direction node and set Method to Inflow.
  3. Select the Top > Physics Conditions > Electric Current Direction node and set Method to Outflow.
  4. Save the simulation.
