Airgap Remeshing: Electronic Speedometer
Electric machine simulations require a conformal mesh at the interfaces between different components. Airgap remeshing is a meshing technique that allows you to generate and maintain conformal meshes between regions that are in relative motion.
Running the Simulation
Before you run the simulation, check that the interfaces are correctly defined and that the mesh is conformal.

    This tutorial demonstrates some of the capabilities of the Ohmic Heating model available in Simcenter STAR-CCM+.

    Electric machine simulations require a conformal mesh at the interfaces between different components. Airgap remeshing is a meshing technique that allows you to generate and maintain conformal meshes between regions that are in relative motion.
    - Prerequisites
      To complete this tutorial, you require a double-precision version of Simcenter STAR-CCM+. Also, the instructions in this tutorial assume that you are already familiar with certain techniques in Simcenter STAR-CCM+.
    - Loading the Initial Simulation
      For this tutorial, you are provided with a starting simulation that includes the CAD model and regions that represent the magnet, the coils, and the main air domain.
    - Defining the Rotation Motion
      The magnet and the surrounding air rotate rigidly at 1 rps. Define the rotation motion and create a local coordinate system that follows the rotation.
    - Defining Mesh Operations for the Airgap
      In electric machine applications, it is common to generate a tetrahedral mesh for parts with a complex geometry and then extrude it to the parts that have a more regular geometry. For illustration purposes, this tutorial adopts the same meshing strategy, although this simple geometry could be meshed directly using the directed mesher.
    - Defining the Magnet Physics
      Select the physics models that define the magnet physics. To account for the rotation of the magnet, you define the magnetization direction in a local coordinate system that follows its motion.
    - Defining the Coils Physics
      Select the physics models for the excitation coils and define region settings.
    - Defining the Physics of the Air Regions
      As you are only interested in the magnetic potential solution, you model the air regions as a gas without selecting any flow model. Modeling air using a flow solver would require solving the equations of flow, which is not necessary in this case. For airgap remeshing, you require the Airgap Remeshing model.
    - Creating the Airgap Regions
      For the airgap, you require two regions—one region that rotates with the magnet and the surrounding air region, and a stationary region.
    - Generating the Mesh
      Generate the mesh and visualize it in a mesh scene.
    - Creating the Interfaces
      Setting up a simulation with airgap remeshing requires that you manually define interfaces. For airgap remeshing, you require a repeating interface between the airgap regions.
    - Creating Scenes and Reports
      For visualization, create reports for the magnetic flux linkage in the coils and the voltage induced in the coils by the magnet motion. Also create a vector scene that displays the magnetic flux density.
    - Running the Simulation
      Before you run the simulation, check that the interfaces are correctly defined and that the mesh is conformal.
    - Summary
      This tutorial demonstrated how to use the Airgap Remeshing model.

    Axial flux motors have, over recent years, become increasingly more popular for aerospace and automotive applications. One of the main advantages of axial flux motors is their high power density, which allows for high efficiency in compact designs.

Running the Simulation

Before you run the simulation, check that the interfaces are correctly defined and that the mesh is conformal.

To make sure that all internal and periodic interfaces have been created, you can initialize the solution and check the mesh scene.

As you generated the mesh before creating the interfaces, the mesh scene does not include interface boundaries. When you initialize the solution, the boundaries that belong to interfaces are mapped to their respective interface boundaries. If they are mapped correctly, they should disappear from the scene.

Click (Initialize Solution).
Expand the Scenes node and open Mesh Scene 1.

The scene shows that the internal boundaries and the boundaries that belong to the periodic interfaces have been correctly mapped to their respective interfaces.
Open the Conformal Mesh Check scene.

The scene shows that all interfaces are conformal.

To set the simulation time-step and increase the verbosity of the airgap remeshing solver:

Expand the Solvers node and set the following properties:

Define the number of inner iterations and the maximum physical time:

Edit the Stopping Criteria node and set the following properties:
