Assigning the Particle and Solid Regions

You assign the Bucket and the Domain geometry parts each to their own region. The two regions are of different types.

The Domain region is a particle region, which means that particle physics can be solved within this region without requiring any volume mesh. The DEM particles move within the particle region, where they can interact with other particles and with the surfaces presented by the region boundaries and any solid bodies within the region. In this tutorial, the excavator shovel is the solid body that the particles interact with. This body is bounded by the walls of the solid region.

To assign the particle and solid regions:

  1. Expand the Geometry > Parts node and multi-select Bucket and Domain.
  2. Right-click the selection and select Assign Parts to Regions....
  3. In the Assign Parts to Regions dialog, make the following selections:
    • Create a Region for Each Part
    • Create a Boundary for Each Part Surface
    • Do Not Create Interfaces From Contacts

  4. Click Apply and Close.
  5. Select the Regions > Bucket node and set Type to Solid Region.
  6. Select the Regions > Domain node and set Type to Particle Region.
  7. Save the simulation.
