Meshfree DEM: Excavator
For DEM simulations of particles that are not significantly impacted by the surrounding fluid, Simcenter STAR-CCM+ allows you to model the particle behavior without requiring a volume mesh. This type of simulation is known as meshfree DEM.
Visualizing the DEM Particles
To visualize the DEM particles, set up the Scene in preparation for the injection and excavation of the DEM particles.

    - Prerequisites
      The instructions in this tutorial assume that you are already familiar with certain techniques in Simcenter STAR-CCM+.
    - Loading the Starting Simulation File
      You start this tutorial by loading a starting simulation file that contains the geometry of the computational domain including the excavator shovel. The user-defined field functions and the parameters that describe the motion of the excavator shovel are pre-defined within the starting simulation file.
    - Assigning the Particle and Solid Regions
      You assign the Bucket and the Domain geometry parts each to their own region. The two regions are of different types.
    - Selecting the Physics Models for Meshfree DEM
      When you select the Meshfree DEM model, all other models that are typically required for this type of simulation are selected automatically. You also account for the effect of gravity on the particles.
    - Defining the DEM Particles and their Interactions
      You define solid DEM particles of spherical shape that interact with each other and with the walls of the excavator shovel and the domain. This interaction is governed by the Hertz Mindlin model.
    - Prescribing the Bucket Motion
      You prescribe the motion of the excavator shovel as a translational motion in the X-Y plane superposed with a rotational motion around the X axis. The starting simulation file contains field functions that describe this motion.
    - Injecting the Particles
      At the beginning of the simulation, 2000 particles with a diameter of 50 mm are at rest within the domain trench. Simcenter STAR-CCM+ uses injectors to add particles to a simulation.
    - Visualizing the DEM Particles
      To visualize the DEM particles, set up the Scene in preparation for the injection and excavation of the DEM particles.
    - Running the Simulation
      The simulation runs for a physical time duration of 7.0 s with a time-step of 0.01 s. This takes less than a minute of real time to run, allowing you to view the action.

Visualizing the DEM Particles

To visualize the DEM particles, set up the Scene in preparation for the injection and excavation of the DEM particles.

To visualize the DEM particles:

Right-click the Scenes > Particles node and select Open.
Select Scenes > Particles > Outline 1 > Parts and set Parts to the following:
- Regions > Bucket > Boundaries
- Regions > Domain > Boundaries

Edit the Scenes > Particles node and set the following properties:

Parts	Parts	Lagrangian Phases > Particles
Scalar Field	Function	Particle > Particle Velocity > Magnitude
Color Bar	Color Map	cyan-orange-isoluminant

Right-click the Particles node and select New Displayer > Surface.
Select Surface 1 > Parts and set Parts to the following:
- Regions > Bucket > Boundaries
- Regions > Domain > Boundaries > Ground Flat and Ground Trench.
To orient the geometry, from the Vis toolbar, click Save-Restore-Select Views and select Views > -X +Y +Z > Up +Z.
Zoom in slightly as shown in the following image:
Save the simulation.
