Meshfree DEM: Excavator
For DEM simulations of particles that are not significantly impacted by the surrounding fluid, Simcenter STAR-CCM+ allows you to model the particle behavior without requiring a volume mesh. This type of simulation is known as meshfree DEM.
Loading the Starting Simulation File
You start this tutorial by loading a starting simulation file that contains the geometry of the computational domain including the excavator shovel. The user-defined field functions and the parameters that describe the motion of the excavator shovel are pre-defined within the starting simulation file.

Loading the Starting Simulation File

You start this tutorial by loading a starting simulation file that contains the geometry of the computational domain including the excavator shovel. The user-defined field functions and the parameters that describe the motion of the excavator shovel are pre-defined within the starting simulation file.

To load the starting simulation:

Create a directory for the tutorial called excavator.
In this directory, copy the starting simulation file excavator_start.sim from the discreteElementMethod folder of the downloaded tutorial files.
Start up Simcenter STAR-CCM+ in a manner that is appropriate to your working environment.
Click (Load Simulation) from the tool bar and open excavator_start.sim.
Open the Geometry scene.
Save the new simulation to disk under file name excavator.sim.
