What Is a Design Parameter?
A design parameter is a reference variable that you can use to define model dimensions and feature sizes.
Each design parameter has a name and a value. When you enter this name into a dimension dialog (prepended by a dollar sign, $), for example, the dimension is set to the corresponding value of the design parameter. Design parameters are versatile, and you can use them to form larger expressions. Another benefit of using design parameters is that they allow you to change feature values from outside of 3D-CAD.

The icons for user-defined design parameters are colored in black. The icons for interval parameters are colored in blue.
There are 8 types of design parameter:
- Length — defined in one of the standard units of length
- Angle — defined in either degrees (deg) or radians (radian)
- Generic — defines a dimensionless quantity
- Vector — defines a quantity that has both direction and magnitude
- Lab Coordinate — defines a coordinate system
- Generic Interval — defines dimensionless maximum and minimum values
- Length Interval — defines the maximum and minimum length values
- Angle Interval — defines the maximum and minimum angle values
You can either expose existing dimensions as design parameters or else create new design parameters directly.
