Selecting the Pure Thermal Model
A pure thermal simulation simulates only the solidification process of the melt. The solution of the flow equations is de-activated and only the solution of the energy equation is activated. This simulation type lets you analyze the behavior of the solidifying melt with respect to temperature without any flow.
During a solidification process, the total mass of a solidifying part does not change. For a pure thermal simulation, the solidifying part cannot move as a consequence of shrinking. If the density is not constant for a pure thermal simulation, for example, if density depends strongly on temperature, any changes in density result in a change of the system mass. To remedy this behavior, Simcenter STAR-CCM+ applies a corrective energy source term when the pure thermal model is activated.

To select the pure thermal model:
- Open the Physics Model Selection dialog of the physics continuum of the melt.
- From the Optional Models group box, select Pure Thermal.
