Setting up the Adjoint Cost Function

A cost function represents the objective of the adjoint simulation with respect to a quantity of engineering interest. For this tutorial, the target quantity for reduction is the total pressure drop along the S-bend duct.

As a cost function requires an underlying report, you first create the report for total pressure drop across the system.

To set up the pressure drop cost function:

  1. Right-click the Reports node and select New > Flow / Energy > Pressure Drop.
  2. Select the Reports > Pressure Drop 1 node and rename it to Total Pressure Drop
  3. Select the Reports > Total Pressure Drop node and set the following properties:
    Property Setting
    High Pressure [Fluid:Inlet]
    Low Pressure [Fluid:Outlet]
  4. Right-click the Solvers > Adjoint > Adjoint Cost Functions node and select New.

    A Report sub-node is created.

  5. Rename the cost function Report to PressureDrop.
  6. Select the Adjoint Cost Functions > PressureDrop node and set Report to Total Pressure Drop .
