  - Adjoint Shape Optimization: Mesh Sensitivity for Dual Element Wing
    A typical application of an adjoint flow analysis is to use the computed gradients in a shape optimization study with respect to a chosen cost function. In Simcenter STAR-CCM+, simulation operations allow you to construct an automated pipeline for optimization studies without any need for Java macros.

    The operating conditions of an air compressor are stable for mass flow values within a specific range. The operating range varies with the rotational rate of the air compressor rotor. Mass flow above this range can lead to a choke in the air compressor.

Running the Design Study

Define the run settings for the study.

To reduce the computation time, run multiple jobs at the same time. You can run each job on multiple cores to further reduce run time.

Select the Design Studies > Cl_vs_Cd > Settings > Run Settings node and set the following properties:

Note	The number of cores required is equal to Simultaneous Jobs * Compute Processes. The run settings specified require a 12 core machine.

Right-click the Design Studies > Cl_vs_Cd node and select Run Study.
During the optimization study, you can monitor each design in real time in the Output Table window, including the input parameters and responses for each design. Due to the large number of designs, the design study requires several hours to run to completion.

While running the study, Design Manager runs multiple cycles. After each cycle, the designs are ranked. This procedure continues until all 120 designs are evaluated.
