Visualizing the Gap Distance between the Lobes

You use the overset gap distance field function to monitor the distance between the rotating lobes in the course of the simulation. You create a report that outputs the minimum distance between the two lobe wall boundaries. You also visualize the plot of this report over time as an annotation to the gap distance scene.

To visualize the gap distance:
  1. Create a scalar scene and rename it Gap Distance.
  2. Right-click the Gap Distance > Outline 1 node and select Toggle Visibility.
  3. Select the Gap Distance > Scalar 1 > Parts node and set Parts to Regions > Lobe 1 > wall and Regions > Lobe 2 > wall.
  4. Select the Scalar 1 > Scalar Field node and set Function to Overset Gap Distance > Overset Gap Distance of Overset Mesh 3.
  5. Create a report that gives the minimum distance between the wall boundaries of Lobe1 and Lobe2:
    1. Right-click the Reports node and select New > User > Minimum.
    2. Rename the Minimum 1 node as Minimum Gap Distance.
    3. Select the Minimum Gap Distance node and set the following properties:
      Property Setting
Field Function Overset Gap Distance > Overset Gap Distance of Overset Mesh 3
      Parts Regions > Lobe1 > wall and Regions > Lobe2 > wall
  6. Right-click the Minimum Gap Distance node and select Create Monitor and Plot from Report.
  7. Click the Gap Distance tab, select the Plots > Minimum Gap Distance Monitor Plot node and drag and drop it onto the graphics window.
The plot appears as an annotation to the contour plot.
  8. Save the simulation.
