Rotating Flow

Rotating flow usually occurs in rotating machinery such as pumps, propellers, fans, wind turbines, and so on.

Simcenter STAR-CCM+ provides many possibilities to simulate rotating flows. These possibilities include using moving reference frames or rigid body motion involving mesh motion. Both of the approaches require the resolution of the detailed blade geometry thus leading to a large number of cells, which increases analysis runtime and hardware requirements.

A further option to model rotating flows is to use simplified approaches that model the effect of rotating machinery on the surrounding flow field by adding volumetric body forces to the momentum equations or by imposing a pressure jump across a plane surface. These approaches are described in the following sections.
