Circuit Editor Reference

The Circuit Editor provides a graphical interface for creating circuit elements and defining the connections between them. The changes that you make are applied to the simulation only when you close the Circuit Editor.

The Circuit Editor consists of a workspace where you draw your circuit and two toolbars: the Circuit Elements toolbar on the left of the workspace, and the Circuit Editor Actions toolbar along the top of the workspace.

Circuit Elements Toolbar

The Circuit Elements toolbar on the left of the workspace lists all of the circuit elements that are available for selection. Hold the mouse pointer over the icons to see the name of the corresponding circuit elements.

Icon Element Description
Resistance

An ideal resistor with resistance R .

See Resistance.

Capacitance

An ideal capacitor with capacitance C > 0 .

See Capacitance.

Inductance

An ideal inductor with inductance L > 0 .

See Inductance.

Current

Defines an electric current through the element.

See Current.

Voltage

Defines the voltage across the element.

See Voltage.

Power

Defines the power demand on the element. You can define a positive or negative power value with positive power indicating a load.

See Power.

Diode

This element has low resistance in the forward direction and high resistance in the reverse direction, causing electric current to flow mainly in the forward direction.

See Diode.

Joint

This element allows multiple connections, so that many terminals can act together as a single terminal. Joints are removed when the circuit is passed to the solver.

Table

Defines a circuit load as a function of time using tabular data.

See Table.

Multicontact

Defines a group of connected contacts with known resistance and inductance. This element has one negative terminal and a user-specified number of positive terminals.

To specify the number of positive terminals, click the Up or Down arrows beside the terminal. Multiple positive terminals are displayed in a vertical column, allowing you to make the appropriate connections.

See Multicontact.

Excitation Coil

Connects a coil region from a 2D or 3D electromagnetic analysis to the circuit. If you define the region using part sub-grouping, make sure each sub-group in the region has an identical Electric Current defined under the Electrical Current Density Magnitude > By Part Subgroup > [Subgroup] > Ampere Turn node.

This element type is available only when a magnetic vector potential model and an excitation coil model are active in the simulation.

See Excitation Coil.

Battery

Connects a battery module from a battery simulation to the circuit.

This element type is available only when the Battery model is active in the simulation.

See Battery.

Program

Allows you to define a load using a program file (.prg) prepared in Simcenter Battery Design Studio.

This element type is available only when the Battery model is active in the simulation.

See Program.

Circuit Editor Actions Toolbar

The Circuit Editor Actions toolbar contains the following actions. Hold the mouse point over the icons to see the name of the corresponding actions.

Icon Action Description
Rotate element Rotates the selected element by 90 degrees clockwise. The background is blue when an element is selected.
Zoom in Enlarges the view.
Zoom out Reduces the view.
Center Workspace Rescales and centers the workspace to bring all of the circuit elements and connections into view.

Add Earth connection

Remove Earth connection

The appropriate option becomes active when a terminal is selected:

  • Adds an Earth connection to the terminal.
  • Removes the existing Earth connection from the terminal.

Create Connection

Remove Connection

The appropriate option is available:

  • If no connection is currently selected, lets you create a new connection.

Click the terminals that you want to connect, and then click Create Connection again to complete the action.

For more information, see Using the Circuit Editor.

  • If an existing connection is selected, removes the connection.
Flip Connection Becomes active (with blue background) when a connection is selected. Redraws the connection with the orientation of the corners reversed. This can reduce the number of crossing or overlapping connections and improve the circuit layout.

Rubberband Select Selects all components in the area swept out with the mouse pointer. These components can then be moved or deleted together.
Undo Reverts the last operation. Background is blue when actions have been done.
Save Changes

Saves all changes in the Circuit Editor. The simulation tree is updated accordingly, with all new and modified elements and connections shown.

The background is blue when unsaved changes are present.

Close

Close the Circuit Editor. Any unsaved changes are lost.

The background is blue when unsaved changes are present, and grey when all changes have been saved.
