Circuit Connections Reference

Circuit connections connect different circuit elements to form a circuit. For circuit elements with specified inductance, you can define connections that account for the mutual interaction between the inductances of the connected elements.

Circuit Connections Node Actions

New
Creates a new connection node under the Circuit Connections node. Each connection node allows you to connect two or more terminals of different circuit elements.

You can also create connections directly from the circuit element nodes. For more information, see Creating Electric Circuits.

Mutual Inductance Connections Node Actions

Mutual inductance connections account for the mutual interaction between the inductances of the connected circuit elements. The Mutual Inductance Connections node appears under a circuit node when the circuit contains at least two elements with a specified inductance load:

You can create mutual inductance connections between the following:

  • Two inductance elements. That is, any two scalar circuit elements that have the Load Type set to Inductance.
  • Two excitation coil circuit elements, when the Load Type of each element is set to Compound.
New
Creates a mutual connection node, [mutual inductance connection 1]. A mutual connection node allows you to connect two circuit elements that have a specified inductance, accounting for the mutual inductance between the elements.
  • To connect two inductance elements, choose New > General.
  • To connect two excitation coil circuit elements, choose New > Compound.

When the circuit contains only inductance elements or only excitation coil elements, Simcenter STAR-CCM+ automatically creates a connection of the correct type.

You can also create mutual connections directly from the circuit element nodes. For more information, see Creating Electric Circuits.

CircuitElement 1, CircuitElement 2
Allows you to select the circuit elements to connect. You can connect either two inductance circuit elements or two excitation coil circuit elements.
Mutual Inductance
For connected inductance elements, defines the value and units of the mutual inductance. You specify the value using a constant or a scalar expression.

For connected excitation coil elements, this property is not available. Simcenter STAR-CCM+ automatically calculates the mutual inductance from the inductances of each coil region. See Excitation Coil Lumped Parameter Model Reference.
