  - Adjoint Shape Optimization: Mesh Sensitivity for Dual Element Wing
    A typical application of an adjoint flow analysis is to use the computed gradients in a shape optimization study with respect to a chosen cost function. In Simcenter STAR-CCM+, simulation operations allow you to construct an automated pipeline for optimization studies without any need for Java macros.

Loading the Part-Replacement Tutorial Simulation

For this tutorial, you are provided with a simulation file that contains predefined objects and settings.

The predefined objects and settings include:

Geometry
Mesh operation
Boundary conditions

Before launching Simcenter STAR-CCM+, copy the following files from the designExploration folder of the downloaded tutorial files to your working directory:

SpoilerReplacement_start.sim
Spoiler1.x_b
Spoiler2.x_b
Spoiler3.x_b

To launch the initial simulation:

Launch Simcenter STAR-CCM+.
Select File > Load ...
In the Load a File dialog, click Browse...
In the Open dialog, navigate to your working directory, select SpoilerReplacement_start.sim, then click Open.
In the Load a File dialog, click OK.
Save the simulation to your working directory as SpoilerReplacement_run.sim.

To visualise the predefined geometry:

Expand the Scenes node and open Geometry Scene 1.
Click (Make Scene Transparent).
