Creating the Contacts

Before assigning the parts to regions, you define geometry contacts between the parts. As the geometry is a sector of a compressor stage, you define periodic contacts between the surfaces enclosing the sector. Additionally, you create a contact for the mixing-plane interface between the rotor and the stator regions.

To create the periodic contact for the rotor:
  1. Expand the Geometry > Parts > Rotor Passage > Surfaces node and multi-select the P1 and P2 nodes.
The corresponding surfaces are highlighted in the Geometry Scene 1 window.
  2. Right-click one of the selected nodes and select Create Periodic.
Simcenter STAR-CCM+ adds the rotor periodic contact to the Geometry > Contacts node.
To create the periodic contact for the stator:
  1. Expand the Parts > StatorPassage > Surfaces node and multi-select the P1 and P2 nodes.
  2. Right-click one of the selected nodes and select Create Periodic.
To define the mixing-plane contact between the stator and rotor, you create a weak-in-place contact:
  1. Multi-select the Parts > RotorPassage > Surfaces > Int_1 and Parts > StatorPassage > Surfaces > Int_2 nodes.
  2. Right-click one of the selected nodes and click Create Weak In-Place Contact.
Simcenter STAR-CCM+ adds the in-place contact, StatorPassage/RotorPassage, to the Contacts node.
The periodic transformation applied to the periodic contacts is both rotational and translational. For the rotation, you specify the axis of rotation:
  1. Multi-select the Contacts > RotorPassage/RotorPassage > P1/P2 > Periodic Transformation and Contacts > StatorPassage/StatorPassage > P1/P2 > Periodic Transformation nodes and set Axis of Rotation Specification to Specify Axis.
The axis specification for the periodic contacts defaults to the positive Z-axis of the Laboratory coordinate system.
  2. Save the simulation.
