Synthetic Eddy Method Reference

This section details the reference values, initial conditions, and boundary settings for the Synthetic Eddy Method.

Reference Values

Maximum Number of Eddies
Sets an upper limit on the number of initial eddies that are generated within the flow domain by the Synthetic Eddy Method. If the maximum limit is reached, a warning is shown in the Output window, as this could potentially destroy the desired effect of the initial turbulence. It should not be set too low.

Initial Conditions

Synthetic Turbulence Specification
Controls how to calculate an isotropic field of velocity fluctuations that are superimposed on the specified mean velocity.
MethodCorresponding Physics Value Nodes
None

Leaves the specified mean velocity unperturbed.

None
Intensity + Length Scale
Turbulence Intensity
Scalar profile value to specify I .
Turbulent Length Scale
Scalar profile value to specify the eddy turbulent length scale σk .
Reynolds Stress + Length Scale
Turbulent Length Scale
Scalar profile value to specify the eddy turbulent length scale σk .
Reynolds Stresses
Scalar profile values to specify the components of the Reynolds stress tensor:
  • UU Reynolds Stress
  • UV Reynolds Stress
  • UW Reynolds Stress
  • VV Reynolds Stress
  • VW Reynolds Stress
  • WW Reynolds Stress

Boundary Settings

NoteBoundary types that do not require setting any conditions or values are not listed.
Flow Boundaries
The following boundary conditions are available for all boundaries of type:
  • Free Stream
  • Mass Flow Inlet
  • Velocity Inlet
Synthetic Turbulence Specification
Controls how to calculate an isotropic field of velocity fluctuations that are superimposed on the specified mean velocity at flow boundaries. For the available methods and corresponding value nodes, see Initial Conditions—Synthetic Turbulence Specification.
Synthetic Turbulence Mass Flow Scaling Specification
When On, scales fluctuations to maintain constant mass flow across boundaries.
