Adjoint Shape Optimization: Mesh Sensitivity for Dual Element Wing
A typical application of an adjoint flow analysis is to use the computed gradients in a shape optimization study with respect to a chosen cost function. In Simcenter STAR-CCM+, simulation operations allow you to construct an automated pipeline for optimization studies without any need for Java macros.

    One of the study types that Design Manager supports is the multiple-objective tradeoff optimization, also called Pareto optimization. Creating the Adjoint Cost Function

The adjoint cost function specifies which engineering quantity is the subject of the sensitivity analysis.

In this tutorial you want to know how to increase the amount of downforce that is generated by the wing. A force cost function provides this information.

To create a force cost function:

Right-click the Solvers > Adjoint > Adjoint Cost Functions node and select New.

A Report sub-node is created.
Rename the cost function Report to Downforce.
Select the Downforce node and set Report to Downforce.
The adjoint cost function adds the Downforce::Residual monitors to the Monitors node.
