Poisson Equation

The PDE wall distance calculation uses a Poisson-type pure diffusion equation for a distance-related variable ϕ .

This equation is a generalized 3D extension of an exact one-dimensional intuitive formulation proposed by Spalding [396]:

ϕ 2 = 1

where the boundary conditions are set as:

  • ϕ = 0 at the wall boundary (Dirichlet boundary condition).
  • ϕ n = 0 at all other boundaries, where n is the normal vector for the boundary (Neumann boundary condition).

The wall distance d is then computed from this equation as:

d = | ϕ | + | ϕ | 2 + 2 ϕ
