Creating the Inlet Duct

Fluid enters the top of the chamber horizontally through a rectangular inlet duct.

To create the inlet duct:
  1. Click (Make Scene Transparent) to deactivate transparency.
  2. Under Body Groups node, right-click the Main Body node and select Boolean > Slice .
  3. In the Slice Bodies panel, select YZ for Sketch Planes and click OK.
  4. Under Body Groups node, right-click the Main Body 2 node and select Hide.
  5. In the Vis toolbar, click (Save-Restore-Select Views) and select Views > -X > Up -Z.
  6. In the graphics window, right-click on the cross sectional face of the main body and select Create Sketch > On Face.

  7. Zoom in on the top left-hand corner of the main body.
  8. On the left-hand side, right-click the vertical outer edge of the main body and select Project to sketch As construction.

  9. Right-click the top edge of the main body and select Project to sketch As construction.

  10. To create the initial rectangle for the inlet:
    1. In the Sketch panel, click (Create Rectangle) and move the mouse pointer near the top left corner of the cyclone.
    2. Click once near, but not on, the top-left corner of the main body.
    3. Click a second time to the lower-right of the first point as shown:

  11. Constrain the sketch so that the left and top edges of the rectangle are collinear with the edges of the main body:
    1. Using <CTRL>, multi-select the left edge of the rectangle and the vertical construction line, then right-click on the selection and select Apply Collinear Constraint.
    2. Multi-select the top edge of the rectangle and the top horizontal construction line, then right-click on the selection and select Apply Collinear Constraint.
  12. Define the height and width of the inlet using the design parameter:
    1. Right-click on one vertical edge of the rectangle and select Apply Length Dimension.
    2. In the Dimension dialog, enter 0.5*$D and click OK.
    3. Repeat these steps for one horizontal edge of the rectangle, but with a dimension of 0.2*$D.

  13. In the Sketch panel, click OK.
  14. In the feature tree, rename the Sketch 1 node to Inlet Sketch.
  15. To extrude the sketch:
    1. Right-click the Inlet Sketch node and select Extrude.
    2. In the Extrude panel, enter 1*$D for Distance and click OK.
    3. In the feature tree, rename the Extrude 2 node to Inlet .
The inlet duct is added to the cyclone separator.

  16. Save the simulation.
  17. In the graphics window, right-click on the background and select Restore > Hidden Bodies.
