      • Complex Chemistry: Methane-Air Jet Flame

This tutorial demonstrates how to set up and solve a complex chemistry simulation to model finite-rate chemistry in a flame.

      • Spray Combustion: n-Dodecane

In this tutorial, you simulate spray combustion using the Steady Laminar Flamelet (SLF) model with the Soot Method of Moments model.

      • Flamelet Generated Manifold: Perfectly Premixed Combustion with Adaptive Meshing

This tutorial simulates lean perfectly-premixed propane combustion using the Flamelet Generated Manifold (FGM) model in a combustor where the flame is stabilized behind a V-shaped bluff body. The Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model is used to directly resolve the large scales of the turbulence, and model the small scale motions, in the flow domain.

      • Surface Chemistry: Methane on Platinum Oxidation

This tutorial models methane on platinum oxidation using complex chemistry models.

        • Prerequisites

The instructions in the Surface Chemistry: Methane on Platinum Oxidation tutorial assume that you are already familiar with certain techniques in Simcenter STAR-CCM+.

        • Importing the Mesh and Naming the Simulation

To set up the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ simulation, launch a simulation and import the supplied volume mesh.

        • Setting Up the Models

Models define the primary variables that are being solved in the simulation—such as pressure, velocity, temperature, and species mass fractions. In this example, the flow is a laminar, compressible, multi-component gas whose components are reacting chemically with the platinum surface.

        • Importing the Complex Chemistry Definition

Import the complex chemistry definition from Chemkin-formatted files.

        • Setting Material Properties

Gas and surface species—as well as their reactions, thermodynamic properties, and molecular transport properties—are imported with the complex chemistry definition.

        • Setting Initial Conditions

Specify appropriate values for the initial conditions.

        • Setting Boundary Conditions and Values

Specify boundary conditions for the inlet and outlet boundaries.

        • Setting Solver Parameters and Stopping Criteria

Set the appropriate solver parameters and stopping criteria for the simulation.

        • Plotting Simulation Data

Create plots to help you visualize the solution.

        • Reporting and Monitoring with Plots

In this tutorial, the CPU time that is needed to perform complex chemistry calculations is compared with the CPU time for the entire solver calculations.

        • Running the Simulation

          Run the simulation.

        • Examining Plots

Examine the results in the plots.

      • Reacting Channels: Steam Methane Reforming

In this tutorial, you use the Reacting Channel Coupling co-simulation model in Simcenter STAR-CCM+ to solve a reacting flow simulation using the same method as is required for systems such as: reformers, crackers, and process heaters.

      • Acoustic Modal Analysis: Thermo-Acoustic Stability of a Cylindrical Burner

Thermo-acoustic instability, that is, large-amplitude pressure oscillations, can be encountered in many devices such as gas turbines, rocket engines, or combustors. The instabilities, which can have detrimental consequences, are excited by the feedback loop between the unsteady combustion and the natural acoustic modes of the devices.
