Creating the Simulation and Importing the Surface Mesh

Create a simulation, name it ExtrusionDie, and import the supplied geometry.

  1. Launch a double precision version of Simcenter STAR-CCM+ and start a new simulation.
  2. Select the File > Import > Import Surface Mesh node and navigate to the incompressibleFlow folder of the downloaded tutorial files.
  3. Select RubberSealGeometry.x_b then click Open.
  4. To accept the default Import Surface Options, click OK.
    Simcenter STAR-CCM+ imports the file.
  5. Move the image into position, as shown in the following screenshot, and click Make Scene Transparent .

The scene shows molten rubber passing through the die. The short section of the geometry represents the die. The long section represents the extrusion. The free surface of the extrusion is typically set to ten times the greatest dimension of the die cross section, to promote rapid convergence. If the free surface is too short, the solution still converges, but the extrusion profile does not allow a fully developed flow to form.

  6. Save the simulation as ExtrusionDie.
