Body Position and Body Local Coordinate System

Simcenter STAR-CCM+ automatically creates a new Cartesian coordinate system with the default name Body n-CSys when a new 6-DOF body with the name Body n is created. This coordinate system (which can be referred to as the Body Local Coordinate System) moves together with the 6-DOF body and shows the current body position and orientation throughout the simulation.

The precise definition of the body position depends on the body motion option selected for the body. For most body motion options, the body position is the same as the body center of mass location, but for some body motion options a more specific definition is used:

Body Motion Option Body Position
Free Motion Body center of mass
Equilibrium
Four-DOF Maneuvering Motion
Multi-Body Motion
One-DOF Translating Motion Position along direction of motion, starting at translation origin
One-DOF Rotating Motion Origin of the rotation axis
Planar Motion Carriage Attachment point

The Initial Orientation Coordinate System is used to define the initial orientation of the Body Local Coordinate System.

The origin of the Initial Orientation Coordinate System need not necessarily coincide with the initial position of the 6-DOF body. The Initial Orientation Coordinate System can be set to any appropriate coordinate system defining the initial orientation of the body, including the Laboratory system. Upon initialization, the origin of the Body Local Coordinate System is automatically placed at the initial position of the body.

These coordinate systems are illustrated in the diagram below.
