Replacing the Wing and Executing the Pipeline
An advantage of parts-based meshing is that when you have defined the series of mesh operations, you can repeat them on different initial geometries.
In this tutorial, you replace the rear wing component and run the meshing pipeline to generate a new volume mesh. With local surface meshing active, STAR-CCM+ only remeshes surfaces in predefined areas of the fluid domain and uses the existing mesh elsewhere. Local surface remeshing can significantly reduce the amount of time required for remeshing geometries.
Create a part shape that encloses the rear wing component:
- Right-click the node and select .
-
In the Create/Edit Block Part dialog, enter the following properties:
Property Setting Corner 1 [3.71, -1.05, 0.30] m Corner 2 [4.33, 0.03, 1.06] m
-
Click Create then Close.
A new block part, Block, is added to the Parts node. Every surface that is contained within this volume is remeshed locally. All surfaces outside this volume remain unchanged.
- Rename the Block part to Local Meshing.
Activate local meshing and select the volume extent to define the volume that is meshed locally:
-
Select the
node and activate Perform Local
Meshing. The Local Extents node is added to the Automated Mesh node.
- Right-click the Local Extents node and select .
-
Select the
node and set the following properties:
Property Setting Parts Local Meshing Inflation Distance 0.01 m The inflation distance provides a transition zone that allows the mesh to change outside the specified part.
Swap the rear wing for a different design and remesh the geometry:
- Expand the node.
- Right-click the Wing node and select Replace Part.
-
In the Open dialog, navigate to the [INSTALL_DIR]/doc/startutorialsdata/mesh/data directory, select pbm_wing2.x_b, and click Open.
Operations that require an update are marked with a yellow warning triangle.
-
Right-click the Execute All.
node and select When complete, the Graphics window displays the updated volume mesh.
- Save the simulation.
