Specifying Solution Settings for Co-Simulation

The finite element model that you defined contains the required solid mesh and material properties. To specify solver settings and boundary conditions, you create a simulation file from the finite element model.

To create the simulation file:
  1. In the Simulation Navigator panel, right-click disc_fem1.fem and select New Simulation...
  2. In the New Part File dialog:
    1. Set the following properties:
      Group Property Setting
      Templates Name Simcenter Nastran
New File Name Name disc_fem1_sim1.sim (default)
Folder Set this property to the Simcenter 3D folder in your working directory.
    2. Click OK.
  3. In the New Simulation dialog, click OK.
  4. In the Solution dialog:
    1. Set Solution Type to SOL 401 STAR-CCM+ Co-simulation.
    2. Click on Create Solution.
    3. Leave all other settings to their default values and click OK.

  5. In the Solution Step dialog:
    1. Set Step to Subcase - Dynamics.
FSI simulations require a dynamic solid analysis. Dynamic analyses include the inertial terms, which help to stabilize the coupled FSI solution.
    2. Click on Create Step.
    3. Continue setting the following properties:
      Group Property Setting
Properties Output Requests Structural Output Requests1
Time Step Definition End Time 0.1

The default unit is seconds. The end time matches the maximum physical time in the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ simulation.

      Number of Increments 100

      100 increments in 0.1 s gives a time-step of 0.001 s, which matches the time-step in the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ simulation.

    4. Click OK.
  6. Select File > Save > Save and confirm.
