Create Shells

This option is available when the Import Mode is set to create new geometry parts.

When the Create Shells option is activated, sheet bodies in the imported CAD model are converted to shell parts whereas solid bodies are kept as regular parts.

Importing discrete files

The Create Shells option supports files format such as pro-STAR Database and Stereolithography (STL).

If the geometry contains free edges and the Create Shells option is activated then the surfaces adjacent to the free edges are designated as shell parts in the simulation. Parts that have no free edges are assigned as regular parts in the tree. If a part does not have free or non-manifold edges (that is, where every edge is connected to exactly two faces), then they are assigned as regular parts.

Importing PLM XML files

The Create Shells option is not available when importing PLM XML files format into Simcenter STAR-CCM+. However, parts that were shells when the PLM XML file was exported are imported as shell parts.
