VOF Waves Workflow

A VOF Waves simulation is a special case of a VOF multiphase simulation.

The procedure for setting up a simulation using the VOF Waves model is:

  1. Set up the VOF multiphase simulation and select the VOF Waves model.
You can model VOF waves in a single physics continuum only.

    See VOF Wave Model Reference.

  2. Create the light fluid and heavy fluid phases.
  3. In the VOF Waves > Waves node, use the right-click menu to create the waves of the appropriate type.
When created, VOF waves appear as their own node under the VOF Waves > Waves node.

Set up the waves as appropriate for the wave type.

For first order waves and fifth order waves, you specify the following:

    • Wave Height
    • Water Depth
    • Specification Type (Wave Length or Wave Period) and the corresponding value.

For cnoidal waves, you specify the same properties as for first order waves and fifth order waves, and also the following:

    • Order

For superposition waves, you create the necessary first order partial waves and set the following for each wave:

    • Amplitude
    • Phase
    • Specification Type (Wave Length or Wave Period) and the corresponding value.

For User Defined Waves, see Modeling User Defined VOF Waves.

For irregular waves, you specify the following:

    • Significant Wave Height
    • Peak Wave Period
    • Spectrum Type (Pierson-Moskowitz or JONSWAP).

The JONSWAP specification lets you set peak shapes and spectral widths for the random wave.

See Property Lookup for VOF Wave Types.

  4. Set the initial conditions for Volume Fraction, Velocity, and Pressure.
  5. Set the boundary conditions for the inlet boundary and outlet boundary.
  6. Set up wave forcing or wave damping, if appropriate.
