Modeling Battery Cells Using the RCR Model

The RCR model allows for more freedom to modify specific settings and use custom geometry for cells. Optionally, you can choose to use settings previously specified in a .tbm file. To use the RCR model in Simcenter STAR-CCM+, a 0D battery cell is created directly in Simcenter STAR-CCM+.

To model battery cells using the RCR model:
  1. Right-click the Batteries > Battery Cells node and select Create User-Defined Battery Cell.
  2. Right-click the Battery Cells > User Defined Battery Cell node and select Select Battery Cell Models... to open the model selection window.
  3. Within the Select Battery Cell Models window, activate the RCR Model.
  4. Select the Battery Cells > User Defined Battery Cell > RCR Equivalent Circuit Model node and set the desired properties—in particular, set the cell capacity and the initial state of charge.
  5. To create RCR parameter tables, do one of the following:
    • To extract RCR parameters from a .tbm file, right-click the RCR Equivalent Circuit Model node and select Extract RCR Parameters from TBM File.
    • To extract RCR parameters from an Amesim file, right-click the RCR Equivalent Circuit Model node and select Extract RCR Parameters from Amesim File.
    • To create a new table, right-click the RCR Equivalent Circuit Model > Parameter Tables node and select New.
Repeat as necessary for tables at a variety of parameter values.
  6. If you are creating a new table, select the User Defined Battery Cell > RCR Equivalent Circuit Model > Parameter Tables > 273.15K Discharge 10.00A node and either select a previously-defined Table, or set the properties manually.
  7. You can define a single battery cell, or multiple battery cells that you can use within a single module, or across different modules.
