  - Adjoint Shape Optimization: Mesh Sensitivity for Dual Element Wing
    A typical application of an adjoint flow analysis is to use the computed gradients in a shape optimization study with respect to a chosen cost function. In Simcenter STAR-CCM+, simulation operations allow you to construct an automated pipeline for optimization studies without any need for Java macros.

Running the Operation Sequence and Analyzing Results

You activate and run the simulation operation sequence, and analyze the results.

To run the operations sequence:

To activate the operation sequence, click the Set Active Simulation Operations icon from the toolbar and select Shape Optimization.
To run the active sequence, you have two options:
- From the toolbar, click the Play/Resume "Shape Optimization " icon.
- In the simulation tree, right-click the Automation > Simulation Operations > Shape Optimization and select Play/Resume.

After 5 optimization cycles, the final scene for the Displacement and Mass Flows plot are as shown below:

The final results demonstrate how the deformation of the manifold Y-Junction allows you to achieve a balanced mass flow split between the outlets within 5 optimization cycles. The mass flow through each outlet is now balanced, with a value of 7.27E-04 kg/s.
