Synchronizing Geometry Parts with the 3D-CAD Model

Synchronize the geometry parts with the 3D-CAD model to maintain an up-to-date list of geometry parts every time you update the 3D-CAD model and geometry parts list.

When you modify the 3D-CAD model, either directly within 3D-CAD, or through a design parameter, you must manually update the model. You must also manually update the geometry parts that are created from the 3D-CAD model.

If you make changes to the 3D-CAD model that result in additional bodies, you must manually create the corresponding geometry parts from the 3D-CAD model, in addition to the existing geometry parts. If the changes to the 3D-CAD model result in the removal of bodies, you must manually delete the corresponding obsolete geometry parts. Keeping track of these changes in a large assembly can be challenging.

Synchronizing the geometry parts with the 3D-CAD model automatically resolves the changes that you make in the 3D-CAD model. If the changes to the 3D-CAD model result in additional parts, the corresponding geometry parts are created. If the changes to the 3D-CAD model result in the removal of bodies in 3D-CAD, the corresponding geometry parts are removed. When synchronized, named entities in the 3D-CAD model (faces/edges/vertices) are linked to the equivalent geometry part objects (surfaces/curves/points) and are also updated to match the changes made in the 3D-CAD model.

NoteSynchronizing a 3D-CAD model with geometry parts still requires you to manually assign the new parts to regions. Similarly, if a geometry part is removed as a result of the synchronization, you must manually delete or update the region that this part was associated with.
NoteAny changes that you make to the geometry parts at the part level, such as splitting surfaces by patches or combining patches, will be lost when you next update the geometry parts.

To synchronize the 3D-CAD model with the geometry parts:

  1. Select the 3D-CAD Models > [3D-CAD Model] that you want to synchronize.
  2. In the Properties window set Part Update Method to Synchronize.
  3. Modify the 3D-CAD model. See Modifying a 3D-CAD Model.
The 3D-CAD Model and geometry parts are flagged as outdated with the (Out-of-Date) icon. No changes are made to the geometry parts at this stage.
  4. Update the 3D-CAD model. See Updating the 3D-CAD Model.
  5. Update the geometry parts. See Updating the 3D-CAD Model.
The geometries parts are synchronized with the 3D-CAD model. If new bodies were added in the 3D-CAD model, the corresponding geometry parts are added to the geometry parts list. Similarly, if bodies were removed from the 3D-CAD model, the corresponding geometry parts are removed from the geometry parts list.
